Tips and Hints:
The following tips are ones I have discovered after playing the game for some time. I find that these few tips are very useful in beating your opponent. As you increase your game skills, read the The Strategy Guide.
Fighters and Bombers:
Fighters and Bombers are excellent against Infrantry, Armor and Transports.
Bombers are bad for offensive moves; use only for bombing cities, exploring and patrolling.
Aircraft Carriers can support more than 8 planes out on the high seas if you keep a few patrolling the carrier. You may lose one or two planes if more than 8 decide to land at once.
Fighers and Bombers are useful radar for Transports trying to navigate through enemy territory.
You can explore a lot of territory with Fighters and Bombers. So, produce them at the beginning of the game and switch to infantry/armor/transports after that to take what you've discovered.
Fighters that accidentally "bump" into submarines have been known to destroy the subs.
Naval Operations:
Like the strategy guide says, Cruisers and Battleships are great for shore bombardment. Make sure you move your ship away from enemy range and repair it before it's too late. You may be bombarded!
Moving Your Production:
Fighters/Bombers:
Should be produced the furthest away from the front lines. They can travel more quickly to the front lines.
Ships:
Should be produced just beyond the front lines and before the fighter/bomber production.
Armor/Infantry:
The ground troops should be produced at the front lines for defending territory and transporting to the enemy. Moving ground troops around takes too much time.
Exploring The Oceans:
When exploring the high seas, Destroyers are the best at finding new cities.
Aircraft Carriers with a few fighters on board also can be useful for exploring.
When exploring by ship, you can efficently navigate all territory without having to explore every square on the map. A unexplored width of 2 squares showing black will indicate no land. A slight amount of green color can be seen if you happen to discover an island that is 1 square in size.

Being Sneaky With Human Players:
If one of your ships finds itself surrounded by the enemy navy with no hopes for survival, disband the unit before it is destroyed. To the other player, the ship simply disappears!
My advice when playing this game: "when in confrontation, be defensive, not offensive"
